There are times when you are going to encounter aggressive drivers on the road. For instance, you may look in your rearview mirror and find that the car behind you is only a second or two back, aggressively tailgating you in an effort to get you to drive faster.
But you should never break the speed limit just because a tailgater wants you to increase your speed. You also should not brake-check them or do anything that could constitute aggressive driving on your behalf. Instead, here is how to handle the situation.
Try to get them to pass
Ultimately, your goal should always be to get a tailgater to pass your vehicle. If they want to drive aggressively and dangerously, let them do it somewhere else—where it will not affect you or draw you into an unnecessary accident.
Exactly how you do this depends on where you are. On multi-lane roads, you may merge into a different lane. If there is only one lane of traffic in each direction, it may help to gradually reduce your speed without hitting the brakes; this makes it easier for the tailgater to pass, even with a small gap in oncoming traffic. If all else fails and they still will not pass, it is sometimes best to pull into a parking lot, turn down a side street or just pull off onto the shoulder for a moment (where legal to do so) so that they can go by.
Your goal should always be safety and avoiding car accidents. Unfortunately, aggressive drivers will sometimes cause crashes that you can’t avoid, and you could suffer injuries due to their negligent actions. Be sure you know how to seek financial compensation.
